CityARTists

Scholarships for visual artists from the member cities

The "CityARTists" funding awards for artists in NRW attract a great deal of attention in the art scene and in the media throughout the state. The prizes will be awarded for the fifth time in 2024. The nationwide call for entries in all member cities is planned for the period from 11 January to 12 April. After the call for entries closes, local juries in the cities will nominate suitable artists by 21 June. An expert jury, for which the NRW KULTURsekretariat is responsible, will then select ten artists from the nominees for the award. The award ceremony takes place in October as part of a public event in one of the member cities.

The funding programme for the visual arts, which was developed together with the member cities, was launched for the first time in 2020. Since then, ten prizes have been awarded annually in the form of grants, each worth 5,000 euros. The prizes are awarded to distinguished artists who have reached the age of 50 and are resident in one of the NRWKS member cities.

In October 2023, Gudrun Barenbrock (Cologne), Sabine Bürger (Essen), Satomi Edo (Münster), Rolf Esser (Hagen), Hartwig Kompa (Oberhausen), Angelika March-Rintelen (Neuss), Ulrike Möschel (Düsseldorf), Lars Rosenbohm (Bielefeld), Petra Siering (Bonn), Heiner Szamida (Gelsenkirchen) and Lars Wolter (Mönchengladbach) were honoured with the coveted prizes. The award ceremony took place in the LUDWIGGALERIE Schloss Oberhausen.

The jury consisted of: Georg Elben (Director of Skulpturenmuseum Glaskasten Marl), Dr Christian Esch (Director of NRWKS, jury chair), Kay Heymer (curator at Museum Küppersmühle), Sigrid Neuwinger (freelance artist, CityARTist Moers 2022) and Dr Susanne Ristow (Kunsthaus NRW Kornelimünster, Programme Director Landesbüro für Bildende Kunst LaB K). Andrea Lamest (Head of the Cultural Department in Gelsenkirchen) was an assessor.

The programme has its own website at cityartists.de, where you can find information about the funding programme and the award-winning artists as well as a film about all the nominees.
