Since 2010, the state-wide unique ‘Next Level’ festival has been showcasing interactive and participatory models of digital gaming culture and highlighting their potential and prospects.

The festival presents a lively panorama of contemporary digital art at various venues in Dortmund for anyone who wants to experience games and digital arts from a new perspective. Between VR worlds, interactive interfaces and experimental games, the festival invites visitors to immerse themselves, explore and participate. The boundaries between play and art, between watching and participating, become blurred.

An educational programme for different age groups explores the spaces between city, digitality and shared reality. It focuses on non-places – those overlooked places of everyday life that are transformed through attention, movement and action. This gives rise to architectural, narrative and virtual spaces of possibility that re-examine the relationship between people, space and technology.

The programme is currently under evaluation. Further information will follow in the course of 2026.
