5. Skulptur Projekte Münster – Sculpture in the Public Space of North Rhine-Westphalia

Research trip

At the invitation of the International Visitors Programme, seven curators from Brazil, Japan, Lithuania, Romania, Russia and the Czech Republic devoted themselves to sculpture in NRW's public space from 1 to 5 August.

The visitors' trip focused on the 5th Sculpture Projects Münster, which has developed into a world-renowned event for contemporary sculptural art since 1977. A special role in this year's realisation of the Skulptur Projekte Münster, which only take place every ten years, was also played by the cooperation and artistic engagement with the city of Marl, 60 km to the west in the Ruhr region, and the Glaskasten Marl sculpture museum located there.

In addition to visiting the works presented in Münster and Marl, the programme focused on other art in public spaces in cities in North Rhine-Westphalia, including the Lehmbruck Museum in Duisburg, the Waldfrieden Sculpture Park in Wuppertal and the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zeche Zollverein in Essen with the Sculpture Forest on the slag heap. The programme was complemented by thematic meetings and discussions with experts, cultural workers and artists on site.
