Funding of performative formats with experimental approaches

With "PerformAktiv", the NRW KULTURsekretariat runs a funding programme for performative formats with experimental approaches. The programme supports the development of performative forms and aesthetics beyond traditional genre boundaries and aims above all to enable works that usually have few chances of receiving funding. It was developed together with the cultural offices of the partner cities.

Due to the constantly growing interest in the past years, this programme will be offered again in 2022 with an increased funding volume compared to the previous year. At the same time, the possible more frequent use of alternative venues due to the crisis will be taken into account. While eight projects in five member cities received support in 2020, 15 projects in eight partner municipalities were made possible in 2021.

Funding is available, for example, for installation works with performative elements or interventions, both in public spaces and at unusual performance venues and thus beyond the classical stages and podiums. Staged productions are not eligible for funding. Organisers, artists, institutions and initiatives from the member cities of the NRWKS are eligible to apply. In the case of digital formats, the artist's place of work must be in a member city. Applications can be submitted throughout the year. The maximum funding amount is 3,000 euros. Applications to the NRWKS must be approved in writing by the cultural offices.

What is funded under the programme?

Funding is available for performative formats with experimental approaches in the member cities of the NRWKS, for example, installative works with performative components or interventions, both in public spaces and at unusual performance venues, which are recommended to the NRWKS by the responsible cultural administration of the member city. Staged productions are not eligible for funding.

Who can apply?

Organisers, artists, institutions and initiatives from NRWKS member cities. In the case of digital formats, the artist's place of work must be in a member city.

Is there a deadline for applications?

There are no application deadlines.

What is the funding amount?

The maximum funding amount is 3,000 EUR.

What funding conditions must be met?

The project must fit into the NRWKS "PerformAktiv" funding programme and be located in one of the NRWKS member cities. In addition, the project must be open to the public, unless it is concept funding.

The project must not have been started by the time the grant is confirmed. This includes public relations work, conclusion of contracts, awarding of contracts and payments.

Funding for parties and organisations that pursue a profit-making objective is not envisaged.

A letter of recommendation from the responsible cultural office/cultural office for the project must be available at the time of application.

How do I apply for funding?

Applications must be submitted using the form provided here, which must be signed by a person authorised to represent the project.

An additional cost and financing plan must be submitted for all projects with a total volume of more than 5,000 EUR as stated on the application form.

Please note whether further documents, e.g. letters of recommendation or letters of approval from other donors, must be enclosed with the application.

The application must be submitted by post.
