1700 Years of Jewish Life in Germany

A year of celebration of the importance of Jewish culture and history in Germany

Since 2007, the NRW KULTURsekretariat has regularly participated in the Jewish Culture Days - most recently in 2019, with a focus on literature.

Once again, this cross-disciplinary series of events, which has been taking place since 2002 and has long since established itself in the festival structure of North Rhine-Westphalia, was all about Jewish impulses in contemporary culture in the Rhine/Ruhr region.

In 2021, the NRWKS will cooperate with the association 1700 Years of Jewish Life in Germany, which was founded in Cologne in 2018.

The aim of the association is to draw public attention to the significance of Jewish culture and history for Germany and Europe this year with nationwide celebrations and cultural events, while advocating for cosmopolitanism, tolerance and peaceful dialogue between people of different religions.

With a multitude of events, also in the member cities of the NRWKS, cultural, political and interreligious debates are initiated within society and clear signs are set against the growing anti-Semitism.

For some time now - and now again on the occasion of the upcoming cooperation - the NRWKS has been committed to teaching everyday Jewish culture in schools as a pilot project.
