Since 2005, the NRW KULTURsekretariat and the NRW Arts Foundation have offered selected teams of theatre makers the opportunity to realise experimental projects, including music theatre for children and young people, in cooperation with opera houses and theatres in NRW.

Such productions are chosen in conjunction with various NRW stages and each is sponsored with up to 100,000 euros, with which music, language and space from the idea through to the first performance are developed closely connected, often crossing the borders between musical theatre and stage plays.

With the realignment, the projects supported by the Experimental Musical Theatre Fund (feXm) have been a process-based and open-ended work with several rehearsal phases within a period of two seasons since 2015.

Single results and sub-steps leading all the way to the first performance will be presented in partial performances, while formats of discourse will supplement the performances.

The focus of attention will therefore be less on the unalterable final result but more on the production process itself.

The focus for future productions is on the networking of houses with an interest in experimental music theatre approaches for joint development work, and on involving them in cooperations.

After successful conclusion of Daniel Kötter, Hannes Seidl and Rahel Kesselring’s work "ingolf" at the MiR in Gelsenkirchen, the season 2016/2017 started with work on François Sarhan’s multimedia project "The Suitcase" to be produced in five work phases in cooperation with the Schlosstheater Moers.

The works of French composer François Sarhan are frequently aimed at the area of cross-media forms. He often acts as writer, visual artist, director and performer at the same time. Just as he does in his mixed media project "The Suitcase", a narrative form of detective comedy with a plot unfolding in the festival city of Moers that pursues a surrealistic puzzle about obsession, detachment from reality and metamorphosis. The actors of the Schlosstheater are joined by an ensemble of musicians from the contemporary music sector. Elements of film meet elements of installation and performance.

"The Suitcase" as a project is made up of four different parts, presented between October 2017 and June 2018. After the kick-off on 6/7 October and the second part on 15/16 December 2017, parts 3 and 4 follow on 16/17 March and 8/9 June 2018.
