Impulse Theater Festival

The "Impulse Theatre Festival" of the NRW KULTURekretariat is the most important platform for the independent performing arts in German-speaking countries.

After the 2021 edition, which again had to take place largely digitally, theatres and other physical spaces will be played from 9 to 19 June 2022: with outstanding works produced beyond the classical municipal theatre apparatus and testifying to special aesthetic quality, artistic innovation or even explosive content.

In the fifth year of his artistic direction, Haiko Pfost, whose contract has been extended until 2024, will continue to focus on a three-part programme with a focus on "Showcase", "City Project" and "Academy". In the upcoming festival edition, the Showcase in the Ringlokschuppen Ruhr in Mülheim will present about ten outstanding positions from the past seasons and the most interesting newcomers of the season. For the city project in cooperation with the FFT Düsseldorf, the "Impulse" will this time be working with the artist group God's Entertainment. In close exchange with the Düsseldorf city population, a temporary place is to be created that makes visible how grown social structures are being pushed out of the city by gentrification.

The academy as a forum for the aesthetic and cultural-political self-understanding of the independent scene will take place in 2022 in cooperation with the studiobühneköln: with workshop and conference programmes lasting several days on the two topics "Theatre between confrontation space and safe space" and "Activism and independent performing arts".

As early as 2013, the Impulse Theatre Festival and the NRWKS took the initiative for the project "Performing the Archive". Since then, a mobile, decentralised archive has been developed within the framework of a mobile decentralised archive has been developed since then, which deals with the history, present and future of independent theatre and functions as a medium for the appropriate visibility of its specific production methods, dramaturgies, and aesthetics.
