Soundtrips NRW

A network for
improvised music
q   Soundtrips NRW

For those who join one of the up to five “Soundtrips NRW” each year, may expect fascinating worlds of sounds, musical new creations and spontaneous encounters with music styles and musicians.

With support of the NRW KULTURsekretariat, the series for improvisation music that started as a »cooperated project« in 2010 has been continuously expanded into a state-wide network and has also attracted much attention in the media.

In the upcoming season, at least ten cities with their experienced concert organisers are participating: Bielefeld, Bochum, Bonn, Düsseldorf, Duisburg, Essen, Hagen, Cologne, Münster and Wuppertal.

»Soundtrips NRW« strikes by its exceptional event concept that is supported by different partners and continuously further developed: Renowned musicians from NRW meet international greats here, younger talents meet established representatives of improvised music.

In the first part of each concert, the international guests play their own programme – in the second, they play together with professionals from NRW and provide the scene with new stimuli.

At the same time, the local hosts also enjoy giving guest performances with their colleagues in the other cities, thereby profiting from additional performance opportunities.

The programme for 2017 again brings first-class international guests to NRW: In March, the outstanding Norwegian trombone player Henrik Munkeby Nørstebø will arrive for spectacular solo concerts: 01 March Cologne, 02 March Düsseldorf, 03 March Duisburg, 04 March Bochum, 05 March Münster, 07 March Wuppertal.

In June, the Wiesbadener Improvisationsensemble, consisting of Ulrich Phillipp (double bass), Dirk Marwedel (extended saxophone) and Wolfgang Schliemann (drums), comes to visit: 04 June Münster, 07 June Essen, 08 June Hagen, 09 June Bielefeld, 10 June Cologne, 11 June Wuppertal.

In September we can look forward to the piano improvisation master Steve Beresford from London, who will set a solo counterpoint to Nørstebø: 02 September Bochum, 03 September Münster, 05 September Cologne, 06 September Bonn, 07 September Wuppertal, 08 September Bielefeld.

In October, the Italian-German duo, Sebi Tramontana (trombone) and Frank Gratkowski (saxophone, clarinets) demonstrate the improvisational balancing act consisting of contemporary melodics and abstraction: 01 October Münster, 02 October Cologne, 03 October Wuppertal, 04 October Essen, 05 October Hagen, 07 October Bochum.

And immediately afterwards the Swiss sound artist and accordionist Jonas Kocher will shine: 31 October Bielefeld, 01 November Essen, 02 November Cologne, 03 November Duisburg, 04 November Bochum, 05 November Münster, 06 November Bonn, 07 November Bonn, 08 November Wuppertal.
