The "popNRW prize" counts among the awards with the best prize money and the highest reputation for pop musicians in Germany.
In August 2017, the NRW KULTURsekretariat already awarded the prize, which was launched in 2012, to successful musicians and promising newcomers from the region for the sixth time. The prize was again awarded together with the NRW State Music Council, the award ceremony took again place as part of the c/o pop festival in Cologne.
In the Volksbühne am Rudolfplatz, several hundred guests celebrated together with the award winners in a cheerful atmosphere. The event was moderated by the radio and TV moderator Anja Backhaus.
The first prize endowed with 10,000 euros in the category »Outstanding Artists« gives the band Woman from Cologne the opportunity to further work on their way to international presence.
At the same time the prize also honoured the group’s positive development since 2015 when they had already won the prize for "Best Newcomer".
The young trio of Nuage & das Bassorchester from Bergkamen had reason to be happy about the sponsorship award for the "Best Newcomer", which comes endowed with 2,500 euros. The second and third places in both categories were acknowledged with further prizes for the fist time.
In 2018 the prize will again be awarded by a diversified jury of experts and staged effectively in the media with the support of the NRW Ministry of Economics. As an integral part of "popNRW" it also draws attention on a national level to this state-wide programme which was started in 2012 with the intention to strengthen the high-profile music scene in NRW and to expand its international standing.
"popNRW" is a year-round sponsorship programme jointly developed by the NRWKS, NRW State Music Council, the NRW Ministry of Culture as well as the NRW Ministry of Economics and local partners. It consists of several modules and is tailored especially to the needs of young musicians. In order to draw even more attention to NRW as a place for pop music, "popNRW" increasingly supports tours and performances outside of NRW. Individual shows as well as gigs at national and internationally popular festivals such as Juicy Beats in Dortmund, c/o pop Festival in Cologne or the Reeperbahnfestival in Hamburg, but also at Eurosonic Groningen or The Great Escape in Brighton, are all part of the performance promotional efforts. Furthermore, professionals offer ambitious bands targeted advice on topics such as social media, artist development or song writing.
