The most diverse musical traditions have increasingly found a home in Germany.

From ethnic classical music to folk and popular songs to the creative mix of old and current sounds: all of these musical diversities belong to our everyday life.

And yet, facets of the so-called world music are still very rarely found today in the repertoires of performance venues and cultural organisers in NRW.

The performance network »Musikkulturen« (Music Cultures), operated jointly with the Kultursekretariat NRW Gütersloh, has made an important contribution to the promotion of world music in NRW since 2012.

Organisers of world music can minimise their economic risk and enrich their repertoire with less-known groups and musical styles.

The project thus promotes remarkable ensembles that can now tour through North Rhine-Westphalia more often, find their audience and make new contacts.

Musical dialogues are also an essential factor of »Musikkulturen« (Music Cultures). They arise from concepts which musicians from NRW develop and implement with international musicians.

Workshops that last several days and that are documented and scientifically accompanied from the rehearsals to the also funded concerts, offer musicians from NRW an opportunity for intensive exchange with international world musicians. A total of eleven dialogue projects have been realised since 2012.

An advisory board made up of relevant institutions, organisers and musicians acts as an expert panel for performances and dialogue projects. It also discusses and develops concepts and strengthens the presence and networking of world musical players in NRW.

It selected a total of 21 extraordinary groups for seasons 2016/17 and 2017/18 – with particular consideration of participants of the nationwide contest »Creole – globale Musik aus Deutschland« (Creole – global music from Germany):

Adjiri Odametey Trio, Banda Senderos, Bukahara, Elektro Hafiz, Evelyn Kryger, Jarry Singla & Eastern Flowers, Kalyani Kirvani, Karibuni, Klare/Bektas/Ak, Mah-e Manouche, Mariana Sadovska, Masaa, Murder Eyez (Abdul Rahman), Nils Kercher & Ensemble, Mariana Sadovska/Christian Thomé, Royal Street Orchestra, Sedaa, Simin Tander, Tabadoul Orchestra, Transorient Orchestra and Sedna & Kuhlmann.

Furthermore, organisers from the member cities are also given the possibility to add concerts from the “Klanglandschaften” (Soundscapes) series like, for example, Dortmund and Hagen in 2017. Season catalogues and the internet provide further information about the groups and their respective promotional periods.
