For decades, the “Impulse Theatre Festival” has been the independent theatre scene’s most important platform in German-speaking countries. From 13 to 24 June 2018, Impulse will again present outstanding works which were produced outside the classical municipal theatre apparatus, and which, above all, review and enhance theatre as a medium offering aesthetic alternatives and approaches.
From 13 to 23 June 2019, Impulse will again present outstanding works which were produced outside the classic municipal theatre apparatus, and which attest to aesthetic quality, artistic innovative power or controversial nature of their content.
The concept that was implemented by Haiko Pfost in 2018 with the three focal points “Showcase“, “City project“ and “Academy“ will be continued in its second year under his artistic direction. His approach is oriented towards the goal of presenting a variety of different theatre forms, developing viable formats for the aesthetic and cultural-political discussion besides established positions and discoveries, as well as making independent theatre accessible for new audiences.
Around ten exceptional positions of the past season and the most interesting newcomers of the current season will be presented at the main venue FFT Düsseldorf and in other locations, such as the tanzhaus nrw. Moreover, bars and project spaces will be integrated as meeting points for the evening as well as for a supporting programme with installations or shorter performances.
The “City project”, realised in cooperation with the studiobühneköln, focuses on fear and its role in political processes. Four groups of artists make fearful issues such as “Prostitution”, “Drugs”, “Masculinity” or “Islam” visible and tangible through plays, installations and performances in selected public spaces in the city area of Cologne.
This time, the Academy will be set up at the Ringlokschuppen Ruhr in Mülheim and serve as a forum for the self-understanding of the independent scene with multi-day seminar, workshop and presentation programmes on the two topics “Self-optimisation” and “Artistic freedom”.
In autumn 2018, the study “Performing the Archive”, designed as a kick-off for the development of an archive of the independent theatre, was completed a year after its start and was presented to the general public. The initiative for the foundation of such an archive started at the invitation from Impulse in summer 2013.
Since then, the concept for a lively archive of the independent theatre was given practical expression in regular meetings. The already started studies on a federal state level will be continued in 2019.
In addition, the newly founded initiative for the archives of the independent theatre “Initiative für die Archive des Freien Theaters e.V.“ will hold a conference on the topic of archives during Impulse 2019.
