For 25 years now, Dortmund has hosted the Festival Freier Theater NRW (Festival of Independent Theatres in NRW), the oldest fringe contest nationwide, every other year. The 14th run will be staged from 24 September to 9 October 2010, under the artistic guidance of Aenne Quiñones. Up until then, event organisers can apply for funding for performances by one of the six prize-winning ensembles from the 2008 festival, under the auspices of a performance network financed and supervised by the NRW KULTURsekretariat. School classes also have the opportunity to benefit from free guidance and education from theatre professionals.
