Wuppertal

For residents of Wuppertal, it is not only the symbol of the city, but also the number 1 mode of transport: over 70,000 passengers ride the world-famous “Schwebebahn” suspended railway everyday.

The city of the world-famous Schwebebahn has loads to offer: a big city in green countryside, the economic and cultural centre of the Bergisches Land region, a university city, 353,000 inhabitants, a zoological garden in an attractive country setting, the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment, Energy and Energy Agency NRW, but above all art and culture. Apart from plays, opera and the Historische Stadthalle, the metropolis of Wuppertal has a superlative art collection housed in the particularly attractive architectural setting of the renowned Von der Heydt Museum. In September 2008, the internationally known sculptor Tony Cragg, who lives in Wuppertal, opened his sculpture park at Hirschstrasse 12 around the Villa Waldfrieden. Apart from the professional artists of all disciplines, it is above all the numerous and no less quality-conscious lay people who support and invigorate musical culture. The traditional Bergisch choirs are also a part of this, as is a highly lively and creative jazz scene.
