Recklinghausen

Recklinghausen’s claim to be a city of culture is rooted in the tradition of the Ruhr Festival, which continues to shape cultural life in the city.

Guest performances by renowned companies are given throughout the year at the Ruhr Festival Playhouse. Plays, opera, operetta, musicals and dance have an appropriate setting in this theatre, which was converted in 1998. Numerous theatre and concert events are offered each season by the Institute for Cultural Work of the City of Recklinghausen. Major play and opera evenings are held, as are entertaining cabaret and small art events, classical ballet evenings and avant-garde dance.

One of the city's cultural centrepieces lies in the field of music. For example, the locally based Neue Philharmonie Westfalen has played its way to an outstanding reputation in the region, while the Youth Symphony Orchestra also stands for excellent performances. In addition, the musical life of the city is significantly noted for its diverse choral scene. Apart from the nurturing of traditional songs, there are other choral groups that are successfully trying out new approaches. Choral concerts of particular stature are given in cooperation with the Neue Philharmonie Westfalen. Also known far beyond the city limits are the Recklinghausen Organ Days, with concerts by international organists.
