Mülheim an der Ruhr

The “city on the river”, with more than 50 percent green space and forested areas, is an attractive place to live between Düsseldorf and the Ruhr district – and a stronghold of nationally appreciated subculture.

Looking at the locally based theatre groups and the great service rendered in theatre-based educational work with pupils, lay people and seniors, it is clear that the city of Mülheim an der Ruhr has rightly earned its reputation above all as a "theatre town". The Theater an der Ruhr, the “Mülheimer Theatertage” and the “Theater Festival Impulse” are amongst the main institutions of the theatre scene in the German-speaking countries. The Theater an der Ruhr owes its standing not only to its powerfully pictorial productions, but also to its international involvement. The “Theaterlandschaften” bring theatre groups from many countries to Mülheim an der Ruhr each year. This opens up new worlds to audiences and facilitates dialogue between cultures. The association Kultur im Ringlokschuppen, K.i.R., which has existed for over 10 years, has a unique event venue with an industrial past for independent stage art and contemporary culture.
