Mönchengladbach

The more than 1000 year-old metropolis on the left bank of the Lower Rhine is noted for its charming combination of urban flair and rural charm.

In addition to the Städtisches Museum Schloss Rheydt, which was renovated in 1994, it is above all the Abteiberg that radiates far beyond the city limits: having been closed for general refurbishment for over a year, the Museum Abteiberg celebrated its reopening on 4 November 2007 with a completely new presentation of its collection. The theatre area had long opted for fusion. For over 50 years, the cities of Krefeld and Mönchengladbach jointly operated “their” three-discipline theatre, the Theater Krefeld Mönchengladbach. Performances in all disciplines – from grand opera evenings to the small recital afternoon - are held in both cities, with a total of almost 600 events per season. At once avant-garde and established, the Ensemblia, Germany’s oldest cross-discipline festival, has for 30 years attracted friends of contemporary culture to Mönchengladbach’s theatres, studios, work halls and other locations in the city.
