Over 600 years after Krefeld was elevated to the status of city in 1373, the population has risen to the current level of 240,000 inhabitants on an area of 13,744 hectares. The economic development of Krefeld began with the arrival of several Mennonite families in the 17th century. They brought velvet and silk weaving with them to the city, which over time developed into the textile industry. Today, the city on the Rhine is a popular location for companies in the chemical, engineering, food, drink and tobacco, medicine and information technology industries. The economic wealth is joined by a cultural one. The art museums of Krefeld are internationally known for their committed support of contemporary art. Since 1989, the Heeder Factory, under the management of the Cultural Office, has been used as an urban cultural centre. It is also home to the city’s children’s and youth theatre centre – KRESCHtheater, which uses the various rooms of the building for theatre rehearsals and performances as well as for offerings and courses in theatre education.
