Hagen

“Come to Hagen, become a rock star, make your fortune!” Illustrious names such as “Extrabreit”, “Grobschnitt”, “Nena” and the Humpe Sisters have stood and still stand for music made in Hagen.

Cultural life in the city on the Volme river has always been marked by a thoroughly active music scene. Numerous choirs, singing associations, bands and music initiatives cover the entire musical spectrum from classical to folk music, from jazz to pop, from rock to punk. But Hagen can also do “classical”, having, for example, a dense museum landscape with many attractive institutions of varying focus and character. From musical and dance theatre, to small-scale art, comedy and cabaret, to readings, presentations, exhibitions and concerts – all this is covered by the jam-packed events schedule at the four independent cultural centres in Hagen. Since 1911, the theatre in the heart of the city has provided stimulation and excitement, education and entertainment. The building, which was originally used as a playhouse, has been a musical theatre since the end of the Second World War. Together with the Hagen Philharmonic Orchestra, which was founded as the oldest communal orchestra in Westphalia back in 1907, the Theater Hagen is an indispensable hub and pivot of cultural life in Hagen.
