Duisburg

Duisburg is the westernmost city of the Ruhr district, a university city, regional centre of the Lower Rhine and, with around 500,000 inhabitants, the 15th largest city in Germany.

Duisburg has made a name for itself as a city of culture. Highlights are ballet, opera and operetta performances of the internationally renowned German Opera on the Rhine at Theater der Stadt. Festivals such as the Duisburger Akzente, the Duisburg Film Week and the Dreamtime Festival also draw international attention to themselves. Duisburg’s four museums are the Stiftung Wilhelm Lehmbruck Museum, the Kultur- und Stadthistorisches Museum, the Museum Küppersmühle and the Museum of German Inland Shipping (Museum der deutschen Binnenschifffahrt). The theatre is one of the most imposing buildings in Duisburg, centrally located in the heart of the city. The theatre community of the cities of Düsseldorf and Duisburg has existed as German Opera on the Rhine since 1956 and is one of the leading opera and ballet companies in Germany. Not far away, in the Mercatorhalle, the Duisburg Philharmonic has recently taken up residence in its new home. The orchestra is one of the most traditional in Germany and also enjoys great success on international concert stages.
