With 330,000 inhabitants and an area of 258 square kilometres, the university city presents itself nowadays as a lively business and cultural metropolis of the eastern Westphalian economic area.

An extraordinary variety of events in Bielefeld are provided by a total of 13 museums and numerous galleries, fabulous productions by the Bielefeld Theatre, four large event centres as well as a highly creative independent art, theatre and club scene. Just a few minutes from the Teuteburger Forest, the top-class exhibitions of the internationally renowned Kunsthalle Bielefeld guarantee pure art pleasure. Bielefeld Theatre is one of the largest theatres in the region, with around 500 performances a year, including plays, dance and musical theatre. The triple-discipline venue thus determines not only the local variety of programmes, but also frequently enjoys national attention far beyond the limits of eastern Westphalia with its versatile repertoire. Bielefeld’s independent cultural scene is omnipresent throughout the year on the streets, squares and at small theatres, with open-air performances and experimental theatre.
