Museum Abteiberg

Mönchengladbach, Germany

The Museum Abteiberg, Mönchengladbach, was designed by Austrian artist and architect Hans Hollein from 1972 and was opened in 1982. It led the great boom in new museum buildings of the 1980s and 1990s and set standards in every respect. His architecture was awarded with the "Pritzker Award" in 1985. Hollein designed the rooms in close cooperation with museum director of the time Johannes Cladders, who since 1967 had implemented an internationally sensational exhibition programme featuring Joseph Beuys, Daniel Buren, Marcel Broodthaers, Hanne Darboven, Lawrence Weiner and others. Today, the Museum Abteiberg can also be viewed as a manifestation of the modern vision of culture: an establishment that focuses on contemporary art and "activates" the observer.
