Thanks to the short-term grants programme "Immer Theater an der Schule" (Drama Everywhere at School) 25 projects were already capable of being put into effect in autumn 2006. However, project requests submitted by the schools rapidly surpassed all expectations, thereby exhausting the overall funds available. Since the middle of 2008 and for the whole of the year 2009, it is again possible to provide much greater sponsorship for promising activities of permanent and independent theatres and ensembles at schools as well as in co-operation with schools of the member cities of the Kultursekretariat. The programme suits all types of schools.
Its aim is to establish teaching elements that will acquaint children and young adults with the theatre, providing preparatory and follow-up work for visits to the theatre. It will also include not only the support of theatrical (co-)productions and measures for theatrical education such as seminars and workshops, but will also support individual courses or workshops with an emphasis on joint theatrical work. An indispensable requirement for receiving the grant will be the integration of theatrical professionals into the programme.
A special feature of the programme is the accompanying theatrical education for schools/classes to prepare for theatre visits and provide follow-up work within the performance network of Favoriten/Theaterzwang (Favorites/Theatre Compulsion) which was introduced in 2006/07.
Since 2007, the Kultursekretariat has also been organising regional technical discussions in alternating member cities on behalf of and in collaboration with the State Chancellery, within the framework of the state project Kultur und Schule (Culture and School). These discussions quickly established themselves as valuable forums, benefiting from the participation of artists and representatives of institutions regulated by public law, such as schools, school authorities, school administration offices, youth welfare offices and culture offices, by exchanging experiences, jointly developing methods and discussing future initiatives for cultural education. The intention is to continue these regional conferences in 2009.
