Jewish Cultural Days in NRW

From 20th March to 17th April 2011 NRW will mark the “Jewish Cultural Days”. For the first time after 1998, 2002 and 2007, this successful series of events which has been supported both financially and with personnel since 2007 by the NRW KULTURsekretariat, takes place no longer only in the Rhineland, but rather in all of North Rhine-Westphalia. Under the motto “einblicke - jüdisches (er)leben” (insights – experience Jewish art) the Kultursekretariat will draw attention to the dynamics of the ever-growing Jewish community and will once again offer an artistic platform for examining the exciting changes and integrative challenges. Contemporary Jewish art and culture in all sectors, with readings, films, dance and theatre performances, exhibitions, music groups and so-called encounter projects of the Jewish communities are at the forefront of the 400 events in the 52 participating cities.

The literature series, managed by the Kultursekretariat, will present a vibrant and diverse picture of contemporary Jewish literature in the international context in more than 25 cities and towns with 70 high-profile events. Authors from the eyewitness generation are invited, the so-called second and the younger generation. They come from Germany, the Netherlands, France, Israel and the U.S., including well-known writers such as Louis Begley, Barbara Honigmann, Rafael Seligmann and Georg Stefan Troller. Guests from the younger generation include Lena Gorelik, Wladimir Kaminer and the Comedian Oliver Polak.

The “Jewish Cultural Days in NRW” provides an inventory of the rich Jewish culture, which in the previous edition attracted around 37,000 visitors.
