How international is regional? Whether in the State Chancellery’s exchange programme with France, in the “Cairo-Beirut” programme of the Rhine cities, on stages, in museums, in orchestra pits – NRW has a close-meshed international cultural network.

The profile of ”International Cultural Relations” in NRW – even with regard to the immense amount of practical and theoretical experience available in our communities – has so far been very local and regional in character. It is therefore in the joint interest of the state and its cities that the experiences, approaches and possibilities on the ground on the one hand and the higher-level political considerations and priorities on the other should be better combined and harmonised.

After many discussions between the cities and state representatives, the cultural department of the State Chancellery of NRW provided the momentum at the beginning of 2009 to strengthen international cultural relations for NRW and to make it the responsibility of the NRW KULTURsekretariat as the most important supporter of culture in the state. The international profile of NRW will now be given sharper focus in close cooperation with the state, its cities and the relevant institutions.
